The community will enjoy significant benefits from the project.

Environmental Benefits
of The Project

Climate change is one of the current critical challenges we face internationally. As highlighted by the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, there is an urgent need to act on mitigating the risk of climate change by limiting carbon dioxide emissions.

Solar farms ensure a long-term positive contribution towards mitigating the effects of climate change as energy is sourced naturally. At Goorambat Solar Farm, our focus will be on preserving the local environment while helping Victoria and Australia to build a cleaner future.

At its maximum capacity, Goorambat Solar Farm is expected to:

  • Power 24,300 Australian homes with clean electricity;
  • Assist in reducing greenhouse gases by approximately 143,000 tonnes per year.

Relevant Policy

Renewable energy is a central component of the shared goal for a clean and sustainable future. The Australian Government is committed to a national energy target of 23.5% by 2020, for total usage of renewable energy sources such as solar. The Victorian State Government has set a slightly higher goal of 25% usage by 2020. The Victorian Government is now in the process of increasing its target to 50 per cent by 2030. As a result, Goorambat Solar Farm will play a significant role in helping Victoria and Australia to meet the goals and move towards a sustainable future.

What is “143,000 Tonnes of
Greenhouse Gas”
Equivalent to?

Taking approximately 30,000 passenger vehicles off the road each year
Approximately 71,000 tonnes of coal burned to generate the same amount of electricity displaced by the solar farm
Emission from approximately 24,300 households’ electricity use for a year

Economic Benefits of The Project

Employment Opportunities

The development and construction of Goorambat Solar Farm will create approximately 250 direct and indirect contract employment opportunities. This includes – but is not limited to – jobs in:

  • Civil works
  • Electrical works
  • Concreting and steel works
  • Landscaping and fencing
  • Transportation, and more.

Additional positions will also be created after the development and construction stages of the project, in order to ensure effective operation of the solar farm. This includes up to three permanent positions, as well as further contracting roles available for the life of the project.

Business Opportunities

Goorambat is expected to attract many long-term business opportunities during the development, construction and operation of the solar farm. The inflow of contractors and other workers will see an increased demand for local goods and services, including (but not limited to) those related to accommodation, food and beverage goods, material supply, vehicle servicing, fuel supply, equipment hiring, and more.

The solar farm is also envisioned to encourage long-term business opportunities from those who may continue to visit Goorambat, such as:

  • Tourists
  • Environmentalists
  • School and educational groups
  • Researchers, and more.

Community Investment Program

South Energy values the communities that host our projects. As such, a Community Investment Program will be initiated in order  to support the community of Goorambat and the greater Benalla region.

This program will involve an annual funding commitment for the life of the project, where a portion of the project revenue will be allocated and invested back into local organisations and projects that benefit the quality of life and wellbeing of local people. Where possible, the funds will be managed locally with community representatives.

More details of the program will be available as the project progresses.

Did You Know?

  • As at 15 March 2019, more than 13,000 Australians were employed in the large-scale renewable energy sector, with this number expected to climb. Not only are these jobs crucial to rural communities, but their positive flow-on effect is felt through local supply chains.
  • Goorambat Solar Farm will bring more than 250 jobs to the region, reducing local unemployment and diversifying Benalla’s economy in the process.
Around 250 contract jobs created by the project during construction
Up to 4 permanent positions open upon construction completion
Long-term local business opportunities
